Company History
Starting as a local ISP for both residential and business clients in Houston, Texas, Oplink.net rapidly evolved to become the most prominent independent and top-rated DSL ISP in the Houston area, thanks in part to our partnership with AT&T for DSL transport. Focused initially on DSL, our customer base in the Houston market grew to over 1500 DSL subscribers.
As our customers’ demand for bandwidth increased, so did our capacity for internet bandwidth. Unlike other ISPs that relied on AT&T’s ATM network for both transport and uplink, we chose a different path by routing all DSL internet traffic directly to our uplink via Level3. This strategic decision provided our typical home users with better pings and lower latency, as they weren’t bottlenecked by a single AT&T ATM link.
Our journey began with a modest setup, consisting of a single T1 connection to Savvis Communications for our Internet backbone and another T1 to manage local traffic via the AT&T ATM network. Fast forward to today, and our capabilities have dramatically expanded. We now boast a 100 Gbps connection to Lumen (formerly Level3), with a backup connection to Cogent Communications. Additionally, we’ve fortified our network with 100 Gbps DDoS protection from Corero, ensuring our edge network remains secure and reliable. This evolution reflects our commitment to providing robust and high-performance internet services to meet and exceed the growing needs of our customers.
2003
In 2003, Oplink introduced dedicated servers housed in customized desktop tower cases. This innovation rapidly gained traction among clients, largely due to the servers being directly linked to Oplink’s 45Mbps T3 backbone, ensuring swift and reliable internet connectivity from the company’s headquarters
2004
In 2004, responding to business clients’ requests to utilize their own equipment within our infrastructure, we broadened our services to include colocation facilities in Houston. This expansion allowed clients to house their own hardware in our secure and well-connected environment, directly at our main headquarters’ server room.
2005
In 2005, we extended our network capabilities by moving into the Premier Level3 Datacenter in Houston, TX. This transition involved relocating all dedicated and collocated servers from our headquarters’ server room to cabinets situated in the ‘open space area’ of the Level3 Houston datacenter. Initially occupying a single 42U rack, our footprint expanded to a total of 8 racks over the course of five years, marking significant growth in our data center presence.
2010
In 2010, Oplink.net embarked on a significant expansion, relocating our datacenter operations to a prestigious 600 sq. ft. private suite within the Level3 facility, initially outfitted with 21 racks. This suite, known for its high-quality racks, wiring, cooling systems, and secure, enclosed environment, was formerly intended for Enron’s broadband content delivery initiative—a project that was never realized before Enron’s bankruptcy. Shortly after this strategic move, we enhanced our network infrastructure with dual 10 Gbps connections, supported by Level 3 and Cogent, to ensure superior service and connectivity for our clients.
2013
In 2013, the private suite adjacent to ours became vacant, presenting an opportunity for expansion. We removed a dividing wall, effectively enlarging our suite to roughly 1000 sq. ft. and adding capacity for 10 additional racks. During this period of physical growth, we also broadened our service offerings by starting to rent out dedicated servers and introducing Cloud Virtual Servers, marking a significant step forward in our infrastructure and service capabilities.
2017
In 2017, AT&T extended a reselling partnership to Oplink.net for its GigaFiber service targeted at both residential and business clients. Seizing this opportunity, we transitioned all our remaining DSL clients to the new fiber service. This upgrade significantly enhanced internet speeds for these clients, fulfilling a crucial need for faster and more reliable connectivity.
2019
In 2019, we took a significant step to enhance our infrastructure by upgrading our core network uplink with Level3 to a staggering 100 Gbps. Alongside this, we installed 10Gb switches in every rack. These improvements resulted in a 3 ms reduction in latency and a simplification of routing. Additionally, we configured all customer setups across our racks for 1Gb/s service. We take immense pride in our commitment to quality and reliability, ensuring that our resources are never oversold and that our customers always receive the full bandwidth they require on demand.
2020
In May 2020, we fortified our security measures by deploying a 100 Gbps Corero SmartWall. This strategic addition was implemented to block criminal DDoS attacks, safeguarding all of our customers’ servers. This enhancement not only adds tremendous value to our service offerings but also ensures that our customers’ servers remain secure and uninterrupted by effectively neutralizing threats that could otherwise lead to server downtime.
2021
In 2021, Oplink.net embarked on another significant phase of expansion, relocating our entire datacenter from Level 3 to TRG Datacenters, situated at 2626 Spring Cypress Rd, Spring, TX, approximately 10 miles north. Our new setup within TRG Datacenters features a highly modern, secure cage that accommodates 27 racks. This state-of-the-art facility is built using the latest construction technologies, featuring indoor redundant power generators and an advanced cooling system for optimal performance.
The move to TRG Datacenters was an extensive endeavor, providing us with an opportunity to redesign and start anew. Our new environment boasts efficient 220v power supplies and innovative secure locked cabinet designs, which allow for the installation of more servers per rack. Additionally, we’ve implemented retractable cable patch box systems, ensuring efficient cable management and maintaining clean, organized cabinet spaces.
